Understanding Teeth Whitening
Professional teeth whitening uses clinically tested, high-concentration bleaching agents — typically hydrogen peroxide or carbamide peroxide — to break down organic stain molecules embedded within the tooth enamel and dentine. Unlike over-the-counter strips or toothpastes, in-office whitening is administered in a controlled clinical setting, allowing for faster and significantly more dramatic results with minimal risk. Our protocol includes a pre-whitening assessment, full gum protection, LED light-activated whitening cycles, and a take-home maintenance kit.
Is This Treatment Right for You?
Whitening is suitable for patients with healthy, unrestored teeth and intact enamel who have extrinsic staining from coffee, tea, red wine, tobacco, or natural ageing. It is not effective on intrinsic staining from tetracycline antibiotics or fluorosis, nor does it change the colour of existing crowns, veneers, or composite fillings. Patients with active gum disease, exposed root surfaces, or severe sensitivity should be assessed before treatment.

What to Expect at MEDICUS
We believe informed patients have better outcomes. Here is every step of your Teeth Whitening journey.
Shade Assessment
Your current tooth shade is recorded using a standardised shade guide (VITA Classical). We set a realistic target shade and discuss expected results based on your enamel type and staining history.
Oral Health Check
We confirm that your teeth and gums are healthy before proceeding. Active decay or gum inflammation must be treated before whitening to prevent sensitivity and complications.
Gum & Soft Tissue Protection
A liquid rubber dam or protective barrier is carefully applied to cover all gum tissue. This is critical for preventing gum irritation from the bleaching gel.
Whitening Gel Application
A professional-grade hydrogen peroxide gel (typically 25–38%) is applied evenly across all visible teeth. The concentration used is carefully chosen based on your sensitivity level and staining severity.
LED Light Activation
A high-intensity LED light is placed over the teeth. The light accelerates the breakdown of the bleaching agent, producing faster and more uniform results across the arch. Each cycle lasts 10–20 minutes and is repeated 2–3 times.
Results Assessment & Take-Home Kit
Final shade is compared to your initial baseline and recorded. A custom take-home tray with lower-concentration whitening gel is provided for touch-up maintenance every few months.

How to Care for Your Treatment
Following these instructions ensures the best healing and longest-lasting result.
Follow the "white diet" for 48 hours — avoid red wine, coffee, tea, tomato, and dark sauces
Do not smoke for at least 48 hours post-treatment
Use a sensitive toothpaste (containing potassium nitrate) for 2 weeks if you notice sensitivity
Avoid very hot or very cold food and drinks for 24–48 hours to minimise sensitivity

Maintain good oral hygiene and schedule regular cleanings to prolong results
“This has been my clinic for years now. Tooth filling, wisdom tooth removal, even teeth whitening — I have done so many procedures in this clinic and I have always been happy with the results and service. Best in town, absolutely recommended!”

Frequently Asked Questions
Everything you need to know about Teeth Whitening at MEDICUS.
How many shades whiter will my teeth get?
Results vary by patient. Most patients achieve 4–8 shades lighter in a single session. The final result depends on your natural tooth colour, enamel thickness, and the type of staining present.
Does whitening cause permanent sensitivity?
No. Sensitivity during and after professional whitening is temporary, typically resolving within 24–72 hours. We use sensitivity-prevention protocols and can recommend desensitising agents to minimise any discomfort.
How long do whitening results last?
With good oral hygiene and periodic touch-up treatments, results typically last 1–3 years. How long your results last depends heavily on diet (coffee, tea, wine) and whether you smoke.
Will whitening work on my crowns or veneers?
No. Bleaching agents only work on natural tooth enamel. Crowns, veneers, and composite fillings will not change colour. If you have visible restorations, we will discuss your options during consultation.
Can I do whitening during pregnancy or breastfeeding?
We advise against whitening treatment during pregnancy or while breastfeeding as a precautionary measure. We are happy to plan the treatment for after this period.
