What Is It?

Understanding Orthodontics

Orthodontic treatment corrects the position of misaligned teeth and improves the relationship between the upper and lower jaws (the "bite") using controlled, gentle forces applied over time. Modern orthodontics offers multiple appliance options — from traditional metal braces for complex cases to ceramic (tooth-coloured) braces and clear aligner systems for patients who prefer a discreet treatment. Beyond aesthetics, correct alignment makes teeth easier to clean, reduces the risk of decay and gum disease, and can eliminate jaw pain caused by bite problems.

Who Is It For?

Is This Treatment Right for You?

Orthodontic treatment is suitable for children (from age 7 for assessment), teenagers, and adults. There is no upper age limit. We treat crowded teeth, widely spaced teeth, overbite, underbite, crossbite, and open bite. Patients with gum disease or significant bone loss should have these conditions stabilised before starting orthodontic treatment.

What to Expect at MEDICUS

We believe informed patients have better outcomes. Here is every step of your Orthodontics journey.

1

Orthodontic Consultation & Records

We take photographs, a 3D digital scan of your teeth, and where indicated, a cephalometric (lateral skull) X-ray to analyse your jaw relationships and plan treatment precisely.

2

Treatment Plan Presentation

Your orthodontist presents a detailed plan including appliance options, estimated duration, and expected outcome. For clear aligner patients, you will see a digital animation of your tooth movement from start to finish.

3

Appliance Fitting

Braces are bonded to the teeth in a single appointment, or your first set of aligners is fitted. You receive full instructions on wear, cleaning, and what to expect in the first days.

4

Active Treatment & Adjustments

Patients with braces attend every 4–6 weeks for wire changes and adjustments. Aligner patients collect new sets every 2 weeks. Each visit takes 20–30 minutes. Remote monitoring may be available between visits.

5

Refinements

Near the end of treatment, any final tooth movements or small adjustments are addressed with additional wires, elastics, or extra aligner sets to achieve the planned result.

6

Debond & Retention

Braces are removed and teeth are polished. Fixed retainers (thin wires bonded behind the front teeth) and removable retainers are provided and explained. Retention is the most important phase — it protects your result for life.

Aftercare Instructions

How to Care for Your Treatment

Following these instructions ensures the best healing and longest-lasting result.

1

Wear removable retainers exactly as instructed — full time initially, then nights only

2

Clean braces thoroughly after every meal using an interdental brush and floss threader

3

Avoid hard, crunchy, and sticky foods during brace treatment — they can break brackets

4

If a bracket comes loose or a wire snaps, contact us promptly to prevent treatment delays

5

Attend all scheduled adjustment appointments — missing visits extends treatment duration

6

For aligner patients: wear each set for 20–22 hours per day for treatment to progress on schedule

Really loved the place — nice staff, nice people. Really quick and good at their job. I had the opportunity to work with all the doctors and I can confidently say I would come back. 100% would recommend to everyone.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about Orthodontics at MEDICUS.

How long does orthodontic treatment take?

Treatment duration ranges from 12 to 24 months depending on the complexity of your case. Simple spacing or crowding issues may resolve in under a year; complex bite corrections can take longer.

Are clear aligners as effective as braces?

For mild to moderate cases, clear aligners achieve results comparable to traditional braces. Severe crowding, large bite discrepancies, or significant tooth rotations may still require traditional braces for optimal outcomes.

Can adults straighten their teeth?

Absolutely. Adult orthodontics is increasingly common. Teeth can be moved at any age, provided the gums and bone are healthy. Many adults choose clear aligners for a discreet treatment experience.

Does wearing braces hurt?

Some soreness in the first 3–5 days after fitting and after each adjustment is normal as the teeth begin to move. This is manageable with over-the-counter pain relief. The discomfort decreases significantly as treatment progresses.

Do I need to wear a retainer forever?

Yes — but not 24 hours a day forever. After initial full-time wear, retainers are typically worn only at night. Retainers are essential because teeth have a natural tendency to drift back without long-term retention.
